FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of copy do you proofread?

We work on anything that includes words – from adverts and packaging to lengthy manuals and reports. We specialise in business communications – so that's marketing materials, annual reports, websites, training and education modules, etc.

We don't proofread dissertations (but know very good proofreaders who do, so feel free to ask for a recommendation).

We have a proofreader or editor to cover most subject areas – please see our Clients page for examples of recent projects.

  • What service do I need – proofreading or editing?

Proofreading is checking your final, edited copy before you publish it – primarily looking for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation. It will also pick up errors in consistency and design, such as incorrect captions or numbers in contents pages, or missing information.

Editing is reviewing the copy before the proofread stage – making sure that it flows and reads well, that sentences are written clearly and concisely, and that the tone of voice is consistent.

As the two services are closely related, we often provide them together – so your copy can be edited and proofread at the same time for minimal extra cost.

If you are unsure which service, you need, send us a sample of your copy and we will be happy to advise you.

  • How long does proofreading typically take?

Turnaround varies, depending on the amount of text and the service you require. As a guide, we can usually turnaround up to 5,000 within 24 hours, but this depends on the quality of the text and the type of service you require.

If it is urgent, we can usually book work in within 24 hours, and sometimes the same day. We will advise you of turnaround time before we begin work or, if you’ve given us a deadline, confirmation that we can meet that date.

  • What formats do your proofreaders work with?

The document should be provided in electronic format, using a word processing package such as Word, or a PDF.

We work with all MS Office applications. We can also amend your website directly if you want to add us to your CMS.

  • How much does proofreading or editing cost?

We don't publish our rates because each job is unique; a well-written and edited report can take less time than an unedited one. However, our pricing is simple with one fixed fee.

Please send us your word count or job brief (ideally with a sample), and we’ll come back to you quickly with a quotation. We can offer preferential rates for repeat business; however, we will always work to the highest standard rather than undersell our services.

  • How can I pay for your proofreading service?

We accept payments via most debit and credit cards, by BACS or online bank transfer. New clients are asked to pay a deposit.

All clients are invoiced on completion of the work; our terms are 30 days (deposits may be required).

  • How can I ensure you keep our proofreading work confidential?

Any work sent to us is treated in the strictest confidence. We only share files with the people working on the project and delete any files in a reasonable time after the work is completed and the invoice paid.

We are happy to sign a non-disclosure agreement with you if required and we are registered with the Information Commissioner's Office in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.

  • Do you do academic proofreading for students?

We don't offer academic proofreading for students, but we know professionals that do!

If you are a student looking for help with your dissertation, we'd be happy to provide the details of companies we recommend who specialise in academic proofreading and editing.
